Feasibility Studies and Design of 400kV Interconnection Standardisation Project (in association with AF Consult, Switzerland)

Narrative Description of Project: The main objective of the study was to conduct technical, economic, environmental and financial analysis of the 400kV interconnection standardization project traversing Kenya – Uganda – Rwanda aimed at facilitating regional energy trade of more than 150MW.
Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff: The scope of this assignment included the following:
- Analysis and design for the proposed high voltage (400kV) transmission line and the associated terminal substations
- Preparation of a bankable document for the project to enable securing of funds from the financing agencies
- Preparation of tender documents for construction of the lines and substations related to the project
- Preparation of terms of reference and Request for Proposal for the procurement of project management and works supervision consultants
- Identification and assessment of potential and social impacts and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies
- Establishment of an appropriate system use wheeling charges model / framework for the promotion of power trade in the region
- Documentation review to make an assessment of energy supply and demand of Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda import/export potential within the region with focus on the market situation upto year 2035.
