Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the proposed abandoned selected quarries in Kayole for Solid Waste Disposal

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the proposed abandoned selected quarries in Kayole for Solid Waste Disposal

Name of Client: Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources (MEMR)

Narrative Description of Project: The main objective of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment study was to identify significant environmental and social impacts associated with the proposed project and recommend appropriate mitigation measures for integration during all phases of project implementation

Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff: The tasks performed included identification of all potential significant adverse environmental and social impacts of the project and recommending measures for mitigation, verifying compliance with the environmental regulations and standards, identifying problems (non-conformity) and recommending measures to improve the existing management system, preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment report compliant to the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (1999) and detailing findings and recommendations. An assessment of the technical options for landfilling the three abandoned quarries was also carried out. The assessment was done through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Non- CDM approaches available for landfilling the quarries. The project involved a critical analysis of the merits of each of the approaches and an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) containing a description of mitigation measures for adverse impacts, measures for enhancing the beneficial effects, and the cost of mitigation against the impacts.
