Preparation of a Disaster Preparedness and Response System within Nairobi Metropolitan Region and Feasibility Study on Establishment of Modern Fire Station

Narrative Description of Project: The objective of the assignment was to undertake a comprehensive study on the region’s existing disaster preparedness, mitigation and management and prepare programmes which could be funded under Component 2 of the NaMSIP, and in line with the safety and security pillar of the Nairobi Metro 2030 strategy.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff: Specific tasks undertaken during the study included:

  1. Review of the existing documents that address the problem of disaster preparedness in the region.
  2. Review of the status of existing related services (e.g. water supply, Fire hydrants etc) and identification of shortcomings and any challenges that needed to be addressed in 13 selected urban areas in the Nairobi metropolitan region;
  3. Preparation of a metro-wide specific disaster management strategic plan which aimed to harmonize disaster management and development that was consistent with environmental, economic and social aspects of respective Metropolitan Counties and/or agencies.
  4. Conducting a feasibility study on the required infrastructure, facilities, and personnel capacity (staffing and training needs) for putting up a modern fire station in the 13 selected urban areas
  5. Assessment of the investment and operation costs of the investments, and the corresponding institutional arrangements to make them sustainable
